  1. This course will explore topics related to gender and sexuality which pertain Asian American studies. The topic includes, but not limited to, readings concerning perceived Asian American masculinity and femininity; gay, lesbian and lgbt experiences; exoticism in mainstream media; females in prostitution and human trafficking; and family/interracial relationships. Although the topic focuses on Asian Americans, students will also discuss topics in a broader global context. The class will have several visual mediums in addition to some of the weekly readings.

  2. Pedagogical statement:

    This student-led course is an opportunity for students to not only learn about Asian American topics, but as well as learning to lead and facilitate discussions. Students will have the chance to plan events and create the following year's syllabus.

  3. This course focuses on the topics of sex, gender, and sexuality in the Asian American culture. The course allows the students to explore the definition of masculinity and femininity amongst the Asian American population and they differ from those in the American culture. An emphasis will be placed on the LGBT experiences from individuals, in families, as well as LGBT movements in the Asian American population. The course will also explore how the topics of gender and sexuality have evolved throughout the years through the study of literature and mainstream media, and how Asian Americans are portrayed in pornography and prostitutions. Mental and physical health issues regarding sexual activities in the Asian American population will be discussed and how the society can provide support to the LGBT community.

This course will focus on sexuality and gender in the Asian American community, and what role they play in a number of topics such as masculinity and femininity, the Asian American LBTQ movement, familial relationships, physical and mental health, adolescent behavior, the media, literature, film, human trafficking, and prostitution. This course is student lead, and will require the students to alternate leading discussions in class with the help a faculty advisor. At the end of this course, the class will be focusing on the local LGBT community, movement, and activism in the Los Angeles area.

    The purpose of this course is to educate students about various topics in regard to sexuality and gender in Asian American community and to encourage student leadership. This class will promote student facilitation, planning speaker events, and creating next year’s syllabus. This course will encourage students to engage with multiple Asian American communities and LGBTQ movements.

  5. A student led course that will focus on the topics of sex, gender and sexuality. Students will be expected to actively participate in class discussions, as well as to complete weekly readings. The readings will focus on topics such as, but not limited to, prostitution, pornography, sexuality in the media, asian american GLBTQ issues, and human trafficking. Through such sources as literature, articles, and film, the students will explore the topics of sex, gender, and sexuality and their effect on the asian american community as well as considering a more global view.

  6. This student-led class will introduce its participants to topics and issues surrounding gender and sexuality in Asian American communities. Students will explore issues such as health, families, the LGBTQ movement, femininity, and media. Speakers and workshops will play an important role in facilitating engagement in these issues during class. Through participation in these activities and discussions, students will be encouraged to engage with issues of gender and sexuality in Asian American communities both on- and off-campus. Additionally, students will be collaboratively designing the syllabus for next year’s ASAM197.

    In the spirit of Asian American Studies and the Third World Strike, this class is designed to promote a democratic space to facilitate the development and growth of student leadership and critical consciousness. Through responsibilities such as facilitating classes, planning events, and designing next year’s syllabus will develop leadership skills applicable to other on-campus issues and organizations.

  7. (This is Jessica Bob Fong/j$/jmoney.) This course will focus simultaneously on issues of Asian American sexuality and pedagogical study. The students will take turns leading discussions on subjects such as Asian American LGBT experience, the exoticism of Asian females in the media, Asian Americans in prostitution, etc. In addition, the students will be responsible for creating a final project, planning next year's syllabus, and compiling readings for next year's class.

  8. COURSE DESCRIPTION

    This student-led course will focus on sexuality and gender in the Asian American community, and what role they play in a number of topics such as masculinity and femininity, the Asian American LGBTQI movement, familial relationships, physical and mental health, adolescent behavior, the media, literature, film, human trafficking, and prostitution. Students will be required to rotate leading discussions in class with the help a faculty facilitator. At the end of this course, the class will primarily be focusing on the local Asian American community, movement, and activism around the issues of gender, sex, and sexuality.

    Speakers, workshops, and class field trips will play an important role in facilitating engagement in these issues throughout the course of the semester. Through participation in on-and-off campus activities and discussions, students will explore the topics of sex, gender, and sexuality, and their effect on the Asian American community while also considering their global implications.

    Additionally, students will be collaboratively designing the syllabus for next year’s ASAM 197.
